In this regular feature we turn the spotlight on three of our favourite Portobello and Golborne Market stalls.
MARK BARR – PUZZLES
Mark Barr has had a stall on Portobello Road for 30 years and he sells an attractive range of wooden and metal puzzles. The wooden puzzles that assemble into everything from trumpets to dragons and the Eiffel Tower to Big Ben particularly catch the eye.
As well as being a busy trader, Mark has spent the last 10 years working with the Portobello and Golborne Management Committee, a non-profit group representing local traders, and he was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2012 for services to the Market. You’ll find his stall on Fridays and Saturdays outside Garcia’s at 248 Portobello Road.
A PIECE OF HISTORY VINTAGE
Jennifer Shaw has been on Portobello Road on Fridays and Saturdays for three years now and she has an enticing selection of vintage and contemporary items on her attractive stall including pretty ceramics, vintage-style boxes and other housewares. “I like to mix and match the best from the past with the best from the present” says Jennifer, “I really enjoy the creative opportunities that having a stall on Portobello gives me.”
You’ll find Jennifer opposite the Alchemy shop at 261 Portobello Road on Fridays and opposite the Portobello Juice Cafe, 297 Portobello Road, on Saturdays.
BERBER RUGS
Originally from Morocco, Mokhtar Ghami runs his colourful stall selling Berber rugs, cushions and throws every market day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Mokhtar has some beautiful handmade rugs and his cushions and throws will add splashes of colour to brighten up any interior. He brings his stock over from Morocco himself. You’ll find his stall opposite the Salvation Army Building at 205 Portobello Road.
