Portobello and Golborne Markets are gearing up to the festive season by switching on their Christmas lights – with the help of a special schoolboy.
The Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Marie-Therese Rossi was accompanied by winner of the borough art competition, 7-year-old Sebastian Ghebrezadick McBean.
The pupil, from St Barnabas and St Philip’s Primary School, was chosen from children across local schools to press the big button.
Sebastian Ghebrezadick McBean said: “I was amazed and excited to be able to switch on the Christmas lights. When I saw the lights come on I thought it was spectacular! It was very special to meet the Mayor and I feel really proud to have won such a big prize.”
Crowds turned out for the event, which featured a performance from Sing to Live, Live to Sing and carol-singing from the 35-member Barlby Primary School choir.
The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Marie-Therese Rossi, said: “With Christmas fast approaching it was a great joy to be present for the switching on of the Christmas Tree lights in Portobello and Golborne markets.
“These markets add so much vitality to our Borough and serve the local community as well as attracting visitors from afar.”
